A Damaging Climate of Fear
Simon Kelner, The Independent | October 5, 2010
The decision by the US Department of State to issue a warning to its citizens traveling to Europe is an unhelpful overreaction, as Americans were not specifically targeted. ++ The warning shows a lack of solidarity between the US and Europe, as terrorism is a common danger to be faced together. ++ If Europeans warned against travel to the US, Washington would undoubtedly be irritated. ++ Moreover, the issuing of vague, slightly panicked travel alerts merely exacerbates a climate of fear and helps do the terrorists' job for them.
