Election Outcome: Affected by Bin Laden?

Joseph Nye, Financial Times | October 16, 2008

Obama’s lead in national and global polls might tempt Osama bin Laden to make a public reappearance. ++ Bin Laden wants the US to continue “policies that create the appearance of a clash of civilizations.” ++ An Obama administration might threaten these intentions as Obama is expected to promote a more diplomatic political course. ++ Unlike 2004, when bin Laden threatened the American people in a video with further attacks, this time - with regard to the financial crisis – it will take more than a video to influence the outcome of the elections.

An attack that removed a particularly well functioning individual from the U.S. pool of national leaders would promote the selection of a hawk as President. A hawk President could more easily manipulated into making attacks on supposedly critical al Qaida positions, and those attacks might well involve heavy civilian casualties. Another breeder-incubator for al Qaida recruits would be greatly welcomed by Osama bin Laden. The cost:benefit ratio for a single assassination is a factor that makes the next three weeks a window of opportunity that we all must seek to keep closed.

The U.S. would be in a more secure position if its population were highly educated with regard to world affairs, and highly disciplined as individuals in their reactions to crisis situations.
