This weekend US Sec. of State Hillary Clinton visited China and let down human rights activists when she “downplayed” the significance of US pressure on China’s dismal HR record. ++ Yes, Chinese cooperation on global climate change and security issues is of utmost importance, but not so if the opportunity cost is to forgo US pressure on human rights. ++ Such pressure has proved to be effective and the US should uphold it. ++ Clinton’s attitude last weekend served to “demoralize thousands of democracy advocates in China.”
