Iran's Cleric-Sanctioned Vote Won't Lead to Change

Con Coughlin, The Wall Street Journal | June 11, 2009

Iranian religious leaders have suppressed efforts by any moderates to gain political power - culling all but four of the original 475 Presidential candidates for the elections. ++ President Ahmadinejad is favored to retain office, meaning social change in Iran is unlikely, even though "the majority of Iranians do not desire to live in a country that is regarded as an international pariah." ++ But no matter who wins the election, President Obama will get "precious little" from his gesture of reconciliation.

I like this comment! What's this?
Nevertheless, the paradox is that Iran has had the most democratic election in it's history, which attracted 84% of the electorate.

The announced results may hav been a trifle undemocratic, with the Supreme Leader having announced the results in a unseemly rush, and very possibly without actually consulting local election officials beforehand. But I'm certain his assistants will get around to informing them of the count for their local districts within the next few days.....

As for the scenes which CNN and other stooges of Dick Cheney transmitted from Tehran? They looked just like scenes from 1979. No doubt we'll soon be informed that they in fact WERE footage from 1979, and not from the tranquil, happy country Iran is today.....

I find it more interesting to see how threatened the Supreme leader feels by one of his handpicked candidates Mr Mousavi. Surely if he had won, Iran wouldn't have been subject to a dynamic anywhere close to the turmoil on hand now.

@ Donald Stadler: what makes you think that the situation in Iran is being exaggerated by the western media? The pictures are the same across all major new networks including middle eastern ones.

To quote myself: "I'm certain his assistants will get around to informing them of the count for their local districts within the next few days"

Who said the 'western media' exaggerated anything? Not me....

What we are seeing is the emergence of a whole new form of democracy, in which the result of elections is determined by the center and the true count sent out to the local vote-gathering offices so they can announce the totals. This in marked contrast to the tired old democratic model practiced in tired old democracies such as those in North America and Europe.

I see it as the culmination of efforts in the US to apply statistical sampling techniques which are advocated to be used to 'improve' the raw count (aka 'actual enumeration') in the US and (perhaps) elsewhere; one determines the necessary result of elections, then uses various means to transmute the actual to that which is deemed necessary.

DO you see my point now?
