Iran: Shame Trials Show Government's Insecurity

Editorial, The National | August 11, 2009

"The shame trials in Iran mask an insecure regime." ++ Tehran's actions must not be confused with an expression of Iran's strength and confidence. ++ They are the leadership's last opportunity to shift away the focus of the regime's lack of legitimacy and authority by linking the domestic opposition to western interests. ++ But the Iranian people know their government and "they certainly understand the duress undergone by every defendant, and they will thus view every confession with justified scepticism."
