NATO Primacy is Necessary

By duplicating rather than completing the alliance’s functions, the Lisbon Treaty proposals on European defense integration damage NATO. ++ Since supranationalism would only further the EU’s democratic deficit, existing intergovernmental defense planning is preferable. ++ EU defense policy should be placed under NATO umbrella to prevent undermining transatlantic bonds and EU members’ military capabilities.
