No Compromise on Cluster Bombs

Editorial, The Independent | November 10, 2011

In 2008, Britain led 22 other NATO allies in signing a ban on the use of cluster bombs. ++ Now the US, a notable holdout of the treaty, is trying to water down the ban to the point of near worthlessness. ++ Cluster bombs are an indefensible weapon, endangering civilian and combatants indiscriminately and designed to cause the maximum amount of carnage. ++ Britain and others are considering accommodating the US so the ban is not completely overturned, but the only right answer can be a firm no.

I like this comment! What's this?
I think it is shocking and embarrassing, as a US citizen, that the US is taking such heavy handed strides to water down the treaty to ban cluster bombs and even more so that they find any reasoning at all to use this form of weaponry. With todays sophisticated and precise weaponry, and the US having access to it, I cannot reason as to why they feel the need to allow the continuation of an indefensible weapon. Cluster bombs are indiscriminate and usually have the greatest negative impact on civilians. I think it would be a shame if the international community has to reason with the US and water-down the effectiveness of the treaty for fear of it being overturned. The United States, as a leading world power, should stand up for what is right and legal in the world. Any reasoning for the use of cluster bombs are neither.
