Obama's Nuclear Disarmament Plans

Editorial, The New York Times | March 26, 2009

Obama stated that he would restart talks on arms controls. ++ The upcoming meeting between Obama and Medvedev on April 1st offers an opportunity to negotiate a successor to START I. ++ Similarly, Obama’s next moves should be to eliminate US nuclear weapons in Europe and push for the ratification of the CTBT. ++ The Cold War is long gone and the US and Russia should end Cold War attitudes to send a clear message to countries like North Korea and Iran that the possession of nuclear weapons in the 21st century serves little purpose.
