Russia's Agenda in Afghanistan

Jonathan Steele, The Guardian | October 29, 2010

Gorbachev recently gave the US valuable advice on the war in Afghanistan that Putin would rather not hear: "Victory is impossible". ++ Yet, Russia's post-Soviet leaders have long seen eye-to-eye with the west on Afghanistan. ++ In fact, they also consider the Taliban and al-Qaida to be greater regional and global threats than Iran. ++ Nevertheless, Medvedev and Putin will not send their own troops, but they firmly want the Americans to stay. ++ Given his experience, Gorbachev should be listened to.

I like this comment! What's this?
Would a commitment of Russian troops to the region even be possible? Can the Russians afford it? Furthermore, would the US military be willing to cooperate with their former enemies?
