The Need for Western Engagement in Belarus

Luke Allnutt, editor-in-chief of Radio Free Europe | March 10, 2008

Lukashenko requires economic stability to maintain his power and popularity. ++ With Russia threatening to double once again the price of natural gas imports to the country, the president has been forced to take liberal measures and expects the EU in return to ease restrictions. ++ Engaging in Belarus is now a moral imperative before Russia gets a chance to exert more influence and impose its harmful model.
