US Should Support Iranian Opposition

Editorial, The Washington Post | July 23, 2009

Obama should continue to make clear that the United States stands with those seeking peaceful and democratic reform in Iran. ++ Although street demonstrations are fewer, Iran's political crisis appears to be intensifying. ++ "Several of the Islamic Republic's most senior leaders openly disputed the attempt by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader, to end debate about last month's presidential election." ++ The policy of the Obama administration will have to do more to take that momentous change fully into account.

I like this comment! What's this?
The outcome of the Iranian internal political situation and the country's nuclear programme are strongly related. On one hand, if a new, reformist government would come to power - which is less and less likely now - they might would accept a compromise offered. on the other hand, if no regime change occurs until a test of a nuclear exploding device, it becomes even harder to crack the hard-liners out of their seats as there would be weaker external pressure on them and possibly even less support for internal tensions, on one hand because of the increased bargaining power through nuclear weapons - it is very important in the Middle East where only Israel has nuclear capabilities - On the other hand, a civil war in a country with nuclear arsenal could be one of the most feared scenarios, enabling circumstances, where warheads would disappear due to lack of security. To avoid such cases many country would rather see a secure regime that is not friendly but only does rhetorical actions then a country with many fractions fighting each other.
