The following video gives an insight into the latest challenge which the Taliban is presenting to reconstruction forces in Afghanistan through the use of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) on the major Highway 1 thoroughfare. It discusses the counter-measures being put in place by ISAF.
- A recent insurgent IED attack on Highway 1 killed four Afghan police officers. Such attacks, in which IEDs are placed in bridges and culverts along the highway, are increasingly prevalent.
- Highway 1 is a crucial and symbolic lifeline which connects all major Afghan cities and allows for the exchange of ideas and goods and the free movement of people.
- The Provincial Reconstruction Team in the city of Kalat has led the way in coming up with measures to counteract these attacks. Jaw trap-like mechanisms designed to stop the Taliban placing IEDs into culverts are one such measure.
- Coalition staff are confident that ISAF is tackling the insurgent attacks effectively. However, they emphasize that fighting these attacks ultimately comes down to the Afghan people who must work with them to acknowledge the importance of Highway 1 and stand up to the Taliban.
