American Mayors Going Green, Reports Anne Underwood
Prepared by Sumaiyah Alazzawi
Anne Underwood of Newsweek reports on the campaign by American mayors to conserve energy and mitigate climate change. City leaders across the United States have joined together and drafted the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The accord adheres to Kyoto Protocol targets, though the US Federal government itself did not ratify the treaty. With a total of 435 cities joining in, the agreement illustrates the desire of the American people to battle climate change despite perceptions that Washington has shirked responsibility. In sum, the cities represent 61 million people, a larger figure than the population of The United Kingdom, and equivalent to that of France.
