"An Inauguration for the People"

John Steele Gordon, Author | January 20, 2009

Barack Obama's inauguration is shaping up to be a party of unparalleled proportions. ++ An estimated 4 million people will attend, as a watershed in US history takes place. ++ The uniqueness of the occasion goes beyond Obama being African-American: he is also the first President of non Western European descent. ++ This day is likely to be reminiscent of the furor when Jackson, himself breaking barriers as the first frontier president, was inaugurated in 1828: an occasion for ordinary people to see the American Dream in action.
