"Iraq May Be Stable, but the War Was a Mistake"
Francis Fukuyama, Johns Hopkins University | August 15, 2008
Recent progress in Iraq does not excuse the war as a whole. ++ It was good to get rid of Saddam Hussein, but the hasty invasion encouraged terrorism and hostility around the world and recent US criticism of Russia’s invasion now seems hypocritical. ++ McCain wants to use US successes to smear Obama, but Obama is right to reject dependence on hard power. ++ Even though Iraq was declared a "mission accomplished" in 2003, it turned into a disaster. ++ We can not make the same kind of foolish assumptions today.
