The 1960s were expected to be the period when ideological tensions would ease in the US. ++ However, feminism, the rise of information technology and the Vietnam War challenged social cohesion and introduced ideological politics, which penetrated both the Democrat and Republican fields. ++ Under Obama -- and his pronounced pragmatism -- America has a new opportunity to end ideological tensions, so long as the new President manages to create ‘’a culture of cohesion and to tackl[e] the issues that require joint sacrifice.’’
