A Change in Germany's Political Landscape

Claus Christian Malzahn, Der Spiegel | September 1, 2009

Germany's national election campaign is heating up. ++ Sunday's elections in three German states showed that the result of this month's general elections is far from certain. ++ With the two main parties of Angela Merkel's CDU & Frank-Walter Steinmeier's SPD losing votes, Germany’s political landscape is gaining a new complexity that creates difficulties for the major players. ++ The centre right of German politics will have to think hard in the run up to the election to avoid the left calling the shots come October.
