The US move towards Asia and away from the Middle East is a smart reorientation of policy. ++ More and more signs point to Asia being the center of world affairs in coming years, and the US is likely to get more return on its investment in Asian institutions than on its nation-building exercises in the Arab world. ++ That the US must have a strong presence in the Pacific seems to be one of the few ideas that Democrats and Republicans both agree on. ++ The US has an important role to play as a regional balancer against North Korea and China.

I think another reason it is important for us to put more of a focus on China is because of their close proximity to other central Asian countries such as Mongolia and Kazakhstan, which will undoubtedly begin playing larger roles due to recent discoveries of vast mineral resources.
