Burma: Too Early to Stop Sanctions

Editorial, New York Times | August 21, 2009

Myanmar's new friendly attitude towards the US hopefully means that the junta is willing to change its authoritarian policy. ++ To be sure, the Obama administration should "test that proposition", but for now it remains "far too early to lift sanctions." ++ Any change in the US policy towards Burma should begin with the junta's commitment to stop persecuting its own people. ++ "The United States should press the junta to free Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi and allow the opposition to participate in fair elections."
