Can China Deal With Transition?

Gideon Rachman, Financial Times | September 16, 2009

It seems the moment when China becomes the world's largest economy is getting closer every day. ++ However, before China will finally become number one, the country has to find a way to manage its two biggest challenges: the democratic and economic transitions. ++ "Without a democratic mandate, the Communist party relies on rapid growth to keep the system stable, thus, somehow the country needs to make the transition to a system in which the government can draw upon alternative sources of legitimacy."
