Chance for a New Momentum in the War Against AIDS

Siddharth Dube and Joanne Csete, The Guardian | August 5, 2008

By denigrating the effectiveness of condoms and demonising sex workers, Bush administration inflicted deadly damage to the fight with AIDS both in the US and abroad. ++ Consequently, global policy-making on HIV prevention regresses just when it's most needed. ++ Until now, UN has failed to challenge American influence. ++ 17th International Aids Conference which takes place in Mexico City this week has a chance to improve the situation and select a new UNAids executive director who will be able to stand up to political pressures.
