China's Naval Expansion: Course to the Middle East?

Bright B Simons, IMANI Center | January 15, 2009

As China's South Fleet moves into the Gulf of Aden to fight Somali pirates, larger "strategic combat configurations" are at play: namely the Middle East. ++ A presence in Aden could secure China the Middle East access it desires. ++ While involvement in Africa is one of China's strategic goals (the Horn receives 70% of China's investment), Beijing may be trying "to match the flair the West once showed in intermixing commerce, investment, arms trading and influence-peddling" in their play for the Middle East.

I like this comment! What's this?
As the rest of the world develops ecology friendly technology, the Middle East has stated during the 2007 Global Economic Forum they are now looking to the east. Meaning India and China for customers. It seems only natural for China to start taking a look toward some help in stabilizing the Middle East and oil tanker ships being under attack by Somali pirates seeking to get $3,000,000 in ransom money. As far as fighting pirates go; so far it seems to be former British SAS/SBS, Indonesia Kopaska (Frogmen), German navy and China navy. In the 1980s even the Egyptian navy and frogmen were training to fight pirates. The US navy seals and French frogmen also have fighting pirates as one of their primary missions.

A China Naval news release in 2007 also stated they considered the navy as ambassadors, because their navy ships were meeting other countries both at sea and in port.
China has the potential to do great good in the world, based on their resources and their current eagerness to get involved. They also have a great history of adaptation and in ancient times had the largest fleet of about 200 ships that sailed the world. I have listed here some of China’s ancient wisdoms which I believe still guide China today.

Ancient Chinese concepts:
Guide to perceiving the world 5 elements
Water – Perceive the situation as though you were experiencing or participating in it yourself. Being moved by the circumstances.
Metal – See through to the cause of the situation. Do not be distracted by the effects. Look for the guiding principles.
Wood – Developments over time tell the truth. Roots are the past, trunk is the present and branches are the future.
Fire – Separate from the situation and like the sun, shine a light onto the situation from a distance.
Earth – Complete centered view. Be the center or cause looking outward at all the effects.

Guiding Strategies from Ancient China 8 diagram strategy.
Lion – Creativity, expressing oneself, decide on a path and follow it through.
Lin (unicorn) – Receptivity, being receptive to new adventurous ideas that build on existing foundations, always learning, stay with the ancient move with the new.
Monkey – Adaptability, reading the situation and preparing oneself to function within those parameters.
Bear – Rigidity, knowing your strengths and using those strengths to succeed.
Hawk – Clarity – see the obvious with your keen sense of awareness.
Snake – Mystery, use your experience to theorize and understand the mysteries.
Dragon – Awakening, continued study and experience in a particular subject leads to enlightenment within the subject area.
Phoenix – Wind, moving with the winds of change and letting those winds guide you to where you can provide balance and harmony to a new area.
