Despite cultivating the image of a "peaceful power", Beijing's response to the Libyan intervention was a missed opportunity for China to embrace the role of a global leader. ++ Instead of acting as a responsible member of the international community, China was preoccupied with protecting its own national interests in Libya. ++ China should have used its position as a non-NATO member of the UN Security Council to create an alliance of African and Arab states to help with recovery efforts in post-Qaddafi Libya in order to improve its global standing.
