China's Rapid Rise: No Real Recipe for Progress

Christian Geinitz, FAZ (in German) | January 19, 2011

China’s economic rise "is not a formula for success in the 21st century." ++ Yet, some observers interpret it as a sign that China's system is superior to the West, whose decadence and decline were revealed by the financial crisis. ++ This account overlooks the environmental and societal costs of China's rise and its flaws.++ Without an independent judiciary and freedom of speech, it lacks the self-correcting mechanisms essential for creativity and innovation. ++ Despite its criticism of the West, China continues to emulate it.

I like this comment! What's this?
Why do many commentaries that refer to regions outside the EU use the term 'west'? It indicates a serious cognitive malaise. What does that make strong single states like Russia, Japan, China, etc. when always referred to as against a collective term called the 'west'? What if they come together as a collective? What is this 'west'? The Nordic states & Canada included, or is it a simple racial term? China is seeking to modernize itself as well as develop itself as a state. As is Russia while Japan is facing its challenges - as a state. Such consistent abuse of the term 'west' makes one wonder about the racial part as well as the religious part - which seem to indicate Christianity by and large. If that be the cognitive malaise that drives most commentaries of such ilk, then maybe the 'men' states should unite too. It reminds one of the account of Cain & Abel as interpreted by Hermann Hesse in his book Damian. Or maybe they should seriously expel christians from all secular states and prohibit any further evangelical missions in the 'men' states. China is rapidly modernizing. In contrast to an ill west. That hardly would be emulation unless given the rising number of Christians in China and that should worry a China intent upon development & modernization.
