China Can Beat America on Morals

Yan Xuetong, Tsinghua University, Beijing | November 22, 2011

The United States and China will compete over global power, but that competition is likely to be more about politics than economics. ++ China can overcome American hegemony not by buying loyalty with economic aid but by developing a more equal and “moral” society. ++ As the gap between rich and poor in the US grows, China would do well by playing on moral leaderships and building regional security arrangements through shared values. ++ This must start by creating a fairer domestic model that appeals to people abroad.

I have visited China on business. It was a very enlightening trip. China is prisitine, people are happy, lots of contruction moving China ahead in development, it is definitely a Super Power with 1.3 Billion people just by sheer numbers.
I was priveleged to meet with Party Heads and associates of three Communist Parties.

I was and am please with what I experienced.
Certainly at this moment in the US if China was to call their note od Debt by the US to China the US would Default, and China would take control. That may be a positive!

China is a communist regime, people have no personal freedoms, no matter how rosy of a picture you wish to make, would rather live in the US any day then China, let them call in their debt, so what, the world economy will collapses, and the US will have to become self reliant once more, and the Chinese can sell their cheaply made products elsewhere. So they think they own the world , of course built on slave labor , as they continue to steal from the rest of us, no inovation comes from china , just patent theft and copying

I agree with allectius. I think this article is very idealistic on what China needs to do to gain a moral advantage on China. Both countries are not overwhelmingly moral in their policies, but the US definitely is more so compared to China. Firstly, morals are subjective and I don't think you can compare a countries successes based on them. Instead you have to look to policy and equality in society, both of which are lacking in both countries. At the end of the day politics or morals alone will not garner global power, economics will.
