Cold Warriors Obstruct the Path to Reset Button

Eric Walberg, Al-Ahram Weekly | July 9, 2010

Dmitri Medvedev has launched a charm offensive to secure American acquiescence in Russia’s drive to deepen its integration with Europe. ++ By supporting further sanctions against Iran and the new START, Russia has shown good faith in pushing the reset button on its foreign policy with the US. ++ Hawks in the US Senate remain stuck in a Cold War mentality and have rejected Russia’s attempts at open dialogue. ++ The American military-industrial complex wants a weak and isolated Russia, rather than a strong partner to an independent Europe.

I like this comment! What's this?
The United States should definitely reset its relationship with Russia. A strong relationship between the two countries can only benefit the world by ensuring greater peace.
This article hit the nail on the head: there is an unfortunately obdurate Cold-War mentality within the States which would prefer a weaker and isolated Russia but this ultimately is not in the world's interest and a weaker Russia does not look like it will happen. It is up to Russia to play a smart and effective politik game by standing its ground where appropriate (the world needs dissent) but also partnering with the United States when it is appropriate.
