Counter-insurgency Can Win in Afghanistan
Frank Biggio, US Marine Corps | July 9, 2010
Successes achieved by the US Marines and their Afghan counterparts in Helmand Province show that the war is far from a lost cause. ++ A bottom-up counter-insurgency strategy has provided local populations with security and allowed for the return of businesses, core services, and governance in territories previously controlled by insurgents. ++ Empowering local government and maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with Afghan citizens has worked. ++ The war can be won but requires a firm resolve from Afghanistan’s foreign partners.
