Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don't

With Abdullah Abdullah stepping out of the presidential running in Afghanistan, the American position has become increasingly uneasy. ++ Having insisted upon a democratic mandate “beyond reasonable question” as a prerequisite for increasing American troops to help fight the Taliban, Mr. Obama is now faced with a serious dilemma. ++ At this point, a weak Afghan partner, coupled with an augmented Western ground-force may give the Taliban the image it needs to support its national liberation rhetoric.
