Don't break the China in the China Sea
Peter J. Brown, Asia Times | June 4, 2010
The failure of Washington and Beijing to come to an understanding in the China Sea may lead to an escalation of tensions. ++ Both countries need an “Incidents at Sea” agreement to prevent further damage to relations. ++ Beijing is annoyed by US probes off Hainan Island, where its new nuclear powered submarines are based. ++ However, “China’s regional objectives... exist in tension with its increasing global interests.” ++ China benefits from the stability that US hegemony provides and "cannot have it both ways.”
