EU: Row in Brussels

G. Nonnenmacher, FAZ (in German) | September 30, 2010

The new EU President has pushed the European Commission to the sidelines in the debate of late. ++ Van Rompuy has been placing greater emphasis on the EU’s inter-governmental aspects vs. its supranational characteristics by calling one summit after the other. ++ Now the Commission is fighting back, with initiatives to control the financial sphere and warnings to France’s over the country’s expulsion of the Roma. ++ “It is high time now for all those involved to disarm verbally.” ++ The EU can only function if everyone abides by the rules.
