EU and NATO Policies Go Together

Henri Bentegeat, EU Military Committee | August 14, 2008

The EU's attempt to develop a European Security and Defense Policy doesn't mean it will compete with NATO. ++ Instead, NATO and EU complement each other. ++ Some countries in Africa or the Middle East would rather ask the EU for assistance. ++ On the other hand, NATO has the better capacities to manage certain long-term crises, e.g., when provoked by terrorism. ++ Military resources are only one of the EU's tools, but it still needs to unify its forces. ++ This would also alleviate the cooperation with NATO.
