Europe Responsible For War in the Middle East

Ulrich Ladurner, Die Zeit (in German) | January 21, 2009

Is the massive reconstruction aid currently being sent by Europe to the Middle East mere compensation for having been unable to prevent the recent Gaza War? ++ If the Palestinians lived in their own state, they wouldn't need humanitarian aid. ++ "By not recognizing a freely elected Palestinian government, Europe has actively undermined the creation of one." ++ Preventing the Palestinian people from living in their own free state will simply lead to radicalization. ++ A long term resolution can only be found in a two state solution.

Classical inversion of causality at work here!

Mr. Ladurner complains about the Palestinians being “eingemauert” and “stranguliert” leading them to resort to terrorism as if the security fence in the West Bank and the blockade of the Gaza Strip were not the very consequence of Palestinian terrorism and thus not exactly aimed at stopping Palestinian suicide bombers from reaching Israel and at hindering the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip. Egypt, the other country bordering the Gaza Strip, has demonstrated to see it the same way Israel does. In fact, I wonder why Mr. Ladurner does not feel that the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are being “stranguliert” by Egypt, too.

In addition, Mr. Ladurner complains about “Augenwischerei” claiming only a Palestinian state will lead to the cessation of terrorism. Yet he apparently fails to see that the very complete Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip – granting the Palestinians there unprecedented freedom in governing their affairs almost amounting to an own state – has actually led to an increase in terrorism rather than to a decrease.

Dear Mr. Petek,

there has never been a complete dissengagement of Gaza as there are frequent military assaults on political personell also killing dozens of innocent civilians standing by accidentally
.
For sure Egypt is not willed to take responsibility for the Palestinians as Hamas is linked to the Egyptian opposition i.s Muslim Brotherhood. And there is no need for Egypt to take responsibility as Israel occupies Palestinian land, not Egypt. 50% of Gazans are refugees from villages they assault with rockets today observing Israelis residing on their property.

Did you forget that the Palestinians have the right to return, didn't you?

Dear Mr. Awwad,

I suggest you try to brainwash other people with your linguistic, historical and statistical twists.

There has very well been a complete Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip as Israel withdrew every single settler and soldier from there leaving it to the Palestinians alone to govern this territory. That Hamas has been firing rockets into Israel ever since forcing the latter to retaliate militarily in order to protect its citizens does nothing to change that fact. Moreover, I don’t know what is more telling, that you define armed Hamas fighters as „political personell [sic]“ or that you define Palestinian civilians taken as human shields by Hamas fighters as „standing by accidentally“.

Well, if there is no need for Egypt to take responsibility neither is there for Israel since both once occupied the Gaza Strip and both have disengaged from it. As Egypt and Israel are sovereign countries I do not see why they should not be allowed to close their border with the Gaza Strip, especially when the terrorism there continues to be a security threat to them.

It is mysterious, too, how you come up with the claim that 50% of Gazans are refugees from Southern Israel as 50% of Gazans did not even exist back in 1949! Even in 1967 the Palestinian population there was just 200’000-300’000 compared to today’s 1.2 to 1.5 million. Besides, if you want to complain about Palestinian refugees from what is today Israel, then you would better direct your blame at the Palestinians themselves and the Arab countries that attacked Israel in 1948 with the purpose of destroying Israel and committing genocide as the Palestinian refugees are a result of Israel’s independence war in 1948-1949.

Furthermore, it is funny how you talk about the right of return but at the same time say that Palestinians fire at „their property“. If they really want to “return” to “their property” and not to kill as many Jews as they can, wouldn’t it be more logical not to fire at all so as not to damage “their property”?

And no, I have not “forgotten” that the Palestinians have the right to return as such a right has never existed to begin with. Jewish refugees fleeing from prosecution in their Arab home countries emigrated to Israel and integrated there leaving their property behind. So I guess there will only be peace when the Palestinians do the same and stop dreaming about destroying Israel from within.
