Extra Troops Needed in Afghanistan
Akbar Ahmed, The Guardian | October 7, 2009
General Stanley McChrystal, the US commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, should get the additional 40,000 troops he requires. ++ Although polls show that the American public has no interest in staying in Afghanistan, the costs of losing the war are underestimated. ++ Full-fledged anti-Americanism and regional powers such as Russia, China and Iran stepping in, are but two of the possible negative outcomes. ++ A new strategy is required that focuses on nation-building and that will deliver security and stability to the population.
