Germans to Get More Aggressive in Afghanistan

Michael M. Phillips, Wall Street Journal | August 13, 2010

Starting in October, Berlin wants its troops to go on the offensive in northern Afghanistan in order to clear the area of insurgents. ++ This operation is intended to help make the handover next year go more smoothly. ++ This plan comes in response to allied misgivings that Germany “is too passive in the face of a growing insurgency.” ++ With its first major military engagement abroad since World War II “deeply unpopular among the German public,” Berlin’s plans expose it to the risk of a serious political backlash.
