Go Green For Real

Joseph E. Stiglitz, Columbia University l January 12, 2010

In the aftermath of the sound failure of the Climate Conference, the first symptoms of a growing lack of interest from corporations for the Kyoto carbon dioxide scheme are becoming apparent. ++ The worldwide infatuation for climate change issues last December has drastically faded away from the market place, as evidenced by the sudden fall of the price of carbon dioxide. ++ A possible alternative might be, on the one hand, the implementation of a border tax scheme, or, on the other, to increase national taxation on polluting activities.

As part of the Grüne Woche Messe in Berlin, I attended an interesting forum discussing the sustainability of agriculture in relation to climate change. Interestingly they put forward a strong case for the diminishing of livestock instead of the instigation of changing our energy resources to renewable sources. Apparently a 25% reduction of livestock across Europe would benefit carbon (methane) emissions to the extent that it would be over 8 times more effective (and instantaneous effects received much earlier) than changing all of our resources to coming from solar/wind other resources. I know very little about this, but perhaps there is someone out there who could expand on this?

The climate is changing. The earth is warming up, and there is now overwhelming scientific consensus that it is happening, and human-induced. With global warming on the increase and species and their habitats on the decrease, chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing.

Many are agreed that climate change may be one of the greatest threats facing the planet. Recent years show increasing temperatures in various regions, and/or increasing extremities in weather patterns.

This section looks at what causes climate change, what the impacts are and where scientific consensus currently is.
