Hezbollah Strengthened by Deals for Factions

Robert F. Worth & Nadia Bakri, The New York Times | May 23, 2008

The recent agreement between Lebanese political factions promised to end the 18 month long political deadlock. ++ Although it amounted to a significant shift of power in favour of the militant Shiite group Hezbollah, the governmental officials believe it helped avoid a civil war. + + Yet the deal did not resolve the questions that provoked the crisis in December 2006. ++ Those include Hezbollah’s weapons, Lebanon’s relations with Syria, and cooperation with UN tribunal to investigate Mr. Hariri’s murder.
