India Key to US Success in AfPak Region

Matthew Kaminski, Wall Street Journal | May 22, 2009

Despite Islamist insurgencies in Afghanistan and Pakistan preoccupying Washington, the solution to the Obama administration's so-called "AfPak" problem runs through India. ++ That Pakistan has nearly 100 nuclear weapons and is so unstable is an obvious threat to India. ++ "For any Pakistani revolutionary, India is a convenient enemy and a fifth Indo-Pakistani war in 62 years is a desirable goal." ++ The US will have to be an intermediary in the region, but New Delhi won't take orders from Washington lightly.

What is the Afghanistan-Pakistan problem that Abbotabad does not highlight? What advantage does India have vis-à-vis Afghanistan-Pakistan? It has a larger market and a more diverse populace. Its military is firmly under civilian control. In regions outside its BIMARU regions & Hindustani populace, it begins to differ a little more and begins to veer towards a modernizing economy as well as a modernizing society. The differences end there. Those differences can be attuned to give India a higher ranking than the Afghanistan-Pakistan problem areas with regards to its potential to be democratic force in South Asia. Its urban middle class represent a emerging market and adds to the advantage of India. It is doubtful if India enjoys any leverage in the Afghanistan-Pakistan regions via its similar BIMARU regions or the Hindustani populace.
