Iranian Leadership Does Not Fit the Soviet Cloth

Danielle Pletka, American Enterprise Institute | December 17, 2009

Washington's containment policy towards Iran is based on outdated Cold War logic. ++ The doctrine of mutually assured destruction does not work as even the most ardent hawks have doubts about US resolve to obliterate Iran in case of a nuclear attack. ++ Although many question whether Ahmadinejad would use a nuclear weapon, "no-one knows whose finger is on Iran's nuclear trigger." ++ Relying on Israel is not a safe option either, as Israeli action may draw the US into a wider regional conflict. ++ Obama will have to find a new way forward.

I like this comment! What's this?
What strikes me most about this article is Ms. Pletka's failure to address how the U.S. might move toward a more aggressive approach in its dealings with Iran when it has invested so many of its resources in Afghanistan. While I agree that current diplomacy has been ineffectual, I wonder how credible a more hardline approach could be at a time when it is rapidly becoming increasing difficult to believe in the ability of America to back up its publicized intentions with decisive action.
