Is Obama the Next Abraham Lincoln?

Henry Gates Jr. & John Stauffer, The New York Times | January 19, 2009

Barack Obama has repeatedly expressed admiration for the man who managed to abolish slavery: Abraham Lincoln. ++ Indeed, the two men seem to have a lot in common given their shared belief in inalienable rights and economic independence, as well as their admiration for the English language. ++ However, what Obama has to learn from the Lincoln Presidency -- and in fact from the abolition of slavery -- is to maintain his pragmatism, as sometimes ideals are better served by attempting to ‘’avoid the worst than to attain the best.’’
