Israel: Two Winners in Rotation?

Gisela Dachs, Die Zeit (in German) | February 13, 2009

Livni and Netayahu are like Schröder and Merkel, but may go another way. ++ Both "have won," Livni with the largest party, Netanyahu due to the strength of the right. ++ Lieberman, leader of the secular far right, could deal with Livni at the expense of the Ministry of Defense. ++ Pres. Peres might tell the "winners" to form a rotational coalition, with two years as PM each. ++ This has worked before, and the most recent "triumvirate" of Olmert, Livni and Barak is a positive example. ++ But all involved must tone down their egos a notch.

It is indeed extremely thrilling to see who will end up being Israel's next Prime Mininister. The most recent dramatic development is that prominent Kadima members pressure Livni to join a Netanyahu-led coalition:

They will come together, sooner or later,:

Both organisations namely Fatah and Hamas are able to contribute a most important asset to the Palestinian Cause such full international recognition through Fatah and solidarity among most Muslims in the world through Hamas. This represents a highly powerful bargaining position towards a rightwing Israeli cabinet, which is labelled to be fascistic (Lieberman) or not willing to find compromises (Netanyahu) before they have even joined forces or Kadima/Labour that failed to stop settlement construction all over their legislature. The difficult the situation for Likud and the rightist block is, the promising it appears for Livni, if she chooses to lead Meretz, Labour and Kadima into opposition in order to witness the Palestinians demolishing the rightist block by combining peaceful resistance and bargaining.
The day Likud recognises their election-promises such leaving settlements untouched and keeping Golan were stub, they would join a Kadima led government together with Labour in order to save international recognition. So Kadima is blessed with the capability to implement the illusion of peace making affords and international recognition by western democracies in a coalition with Likud.
