Israel and Palestine Do Better on Their Own

Tom Gross, The Australian | February 2, 2010

Obama has inserted himself in the midst of a conflict even more difficult than the one between Republicans and Democrats, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. ++ Despite Obama's shift from an optimistic to a pessimistic outlook for the region, there has been progress made in the last year. ++ Violence in both territories has decreased, there have been no suicide attacks against Israel, and there is a strong economic outlook for both areas. ++ Much of this success can be attributed to Israel and Palestine tuning out world leaders.

Great journalism! Instead of repeating the mainstream views that journalists have set forth ad nauseum (and not getting us anywhere with them), Tom Gross uses the "stalemate" in the peace process to tackle the issue from a different angle. In this way he is effectively contributing to a fruitful debate.

Tom Gross reflects an interesting option and cause for the status quo in Israel and Palestine. However he does not indicate how his suggested reconciliation between Fatah and Hamaz should come about. Of course the internal Palestinian reconciliation would give impetus for a state solution, but this is the exact problem. As long as the mutual hostility between Obama, Netanyahau and Abbas with Hamaz prevails, the status quo regarding the conflict can only go worst.

Necessary would be to promote Hamaz to enter talks rather than leaving the government in Rammallah alone with this hurdle.

Excluding Hamaz in dialogues of any sort, the path towards peace will be long since they have not promoted much willingness to stop fighting. More generations under anger, frustration and vengeance will grew up.
