Japan fears abandonment. ++ The US has tried to reassure it by making it the first stop on Clinton’s tour and receiving PM Aso as the first foreign dignitary in Washington, but this does not suffice. ++ Tokyo has difficulty in adapting to the evolution of the international system and cannot cope with China's rise and the Sino-American rapprochement. ++ The economic crisis and the precarious domestic political situation are not making things easier. ++ Tokyo is still striving for a place in the 21st century world order.
