First and foremost: Beijing’s primary international interest is in preserving its own position. ++ The recent execution of Briton Akmal Shaik, despite official remonstrations by Gordon Brown proves that bilateral ties are limited. ++ China’s self-centered approach should not come as a surprise, as it consistently endeavors to improve itself in relation to an overbearing West. ++ “Electronic dominance” will counter the West’s military superiority by 2050, severely tipping the scales in Beijing’s favor. ++ Engaging China must have a new focus.
