Lorenzo Fioramonti and Sonia Lucarelli Analyze the European Union's Global Image
Lack of enthusiasm for the EU at home inspired researchers Lorenzo Fioramonti and Sonia Lucarelli from the University of Bologna, to test perceptions of the Union beyond its borders. Their findings point to a EU little known in Latin America and almost unheard of in Africa. Despite commanding all elements necessary for a larger and more important international presence, in wealthier countries like Australia, Canada or Japan, the idea of Europe does not yet equate EU. They argue that institutional complexities, the Union’s sui-generis nature, lack of uniformity in its foreign policy, faint cultural projection and the absence of a clear European agenda, have all heavily compromised its image.
