Modern China Conquers Long-awaited Empire

Parag Khanna, The Age | April 14, 2008

Tibet and Xinjiang are crucial for China. ++ They offer additional land, strategic geographic getaways, and essential resources. ++ If Chinese control brings wealth, development, and modernity, the promotion of Chineseness abolishes Buddhist and Muslim cultural authenticity. ++ Imperialism is inexorable but lack of resistance may eventually allow interethnic dialogue and a more benevolent hegemony.
