Myanmar Opposition: Not Much Room for Manoeuvre

Tobias Matern, Sueddeutsche (in German), November 16, 2010

Now that Myanmar’s opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been freed, she needs to move cautiously. ++ While she was imprisoned, the opposition movement in Myanmar embraced different tactics. ++ It now prefers to operate within the system, rather than against it. ++ Hence, Suu Kyi will need to work together with other opposition leaders in order not to weaken the movement. ++ It must be remembered that the regime remains oppressive, and it will take a lot of patience to bring about change.
