New Bail-Out: Go See Obama!

Carsten Matthäus, Süddeutsche Zeitung (in German) | February 13, 2009

The curious case of Henrietta Hughes shows American attitudes towards social assistance. ++ Before, she was unemployed and homeless, living in a small car with her adult son. ++ Now, she lives in a spare home of a Republican representative and has a job. ++ Her life changed in front of Obama, and the TV-cameras. ++ This shows "Yes, we can"-attitude, but also miserable American social support, with two-year queues for social housing in Florida. ++ Obama has to present a solution to homelessness that is expected to boom due to the crisis.

I like this comment! What's this?
That news conference was held at ground sero of the US martgae crisis, or very close to it. One of them anyway. There is a homelessness problem and an empty house problem due to foreclosures right in the same area. They may be related some how. ;)

Perhaps the government should buy up the empty houses cheaply at auction and make them available at nominal rents to non-profit 'housing associations' or perhaps to local governments to rent to groups of unemployed and homeless as a first step to getting a job and into decency?
