North Korea Going Hungry

Julian Ryall, The Daily Telegraph | December 3, 2009

North Korea needs to stop trying in vain to feed itself. ++ Given its population and agriculture, it is impossible to grow enough domestically. ++ Investing in industry would bring in foreign currencies with which foodstuffs could be imported. ++ President Obama has already promised to help the ailing economy if Pyongyang moved towards disarmament, but it is clear that nuclear ambitions outweigh the malnutrition of large swathes of the population. ++ As in the past, political goals will supersede the welfare of non-elites.

Reunion of North and South Korea the Real Solution

Let’s stop kidding ourselves. Turn North Korea into another competitor in the global market industrializing to make automobiles and computers to sell to whom? Why the good old USA of course. The country everyone seems to hate, yet still wants us to buy their products. Well guess what? The USA markets are saturated and we cannot buy any more of your products because we are broke. Duuuh. All roads do not lead to the USA.

Reunion
North and South Korea have members of the same families split up and not able to see each other. So whose political goals are keeping families apart? USA and China are not helping reunite these families. South Korea already has industry which sometimes overworks its people 7 days a week, often 3 shifts rotating continuously.
Why can we not UNITE North and South Korean families so they can share the work and share the food?
When the USA and Russia agreed about Berlin, the wall was torn down and Germany reunited. Why does this seem to be such a problem for the USA and China to agree to promote One United Korea?

Check out this Korean video about competition between North and South Korea on the 38th Parallel. It is a dance production from the B-boys. You will be surprised how the Korean people are starting to think about this situation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCxdku8sx-A

Super Projects for One United Korea
Team work often brings people together. Projects created based on current and future needs provide the motivation for teams to work together and get to know and trust each other. If we look at the current ranting, it is all about Nuclear power plants. A modernizing country needs energy to power lights, computers and equipment. What options are being offered instead of Nuclear? Here is a list of some possible ecology friendly energy projects:

Wind Turbines
Link to German wind turbine companies. Scroll down the page and it has a brief description of each company: http://energy.sourceguides.com/businesses/byGeo/byC/Germany/byP/wRP...

Solar Panels
Link to solar power site explaining a variety of situations solar power can be used: http://www.solarbuzz.com/Applications.htm

Marine Turbines
Hydropower options to harness energy from the ocean link with detailed explanations and math: http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Tidal_power

Laser Power Plant
Europe project to use Lasers and water. France has the prototype laser in testing now. Here is a link about the project HiPER: http://www.hiper-laser.org/

Plasma Energy
Magnetic confinement fusion so hot it creates plasma like the sun. The UK and France are experimenting with this technology in an international effort: http://www.physorg.com/news172162391.html

There are also the standard ideas of Hydro electric dams and coal powered electric plants however these are moving out of favor due to environmental concerns. Obviously start with the basic and most practical to create jobs and friendship now between all Koreans and Europe. The rest will follow peacefully.

Farming Projects for One United Korea
There are some modern technology advances in farming and aquaculture that can improve food production in Korea despite the weather conditions. Here is a list of some of these technologies.

Biosphere Farms
The term Biosphere was coined by Russian scientist Vladimir Vernadsky in 1929. It basically means a life zone for living things (plants, animals and insects). In 1991 Biosphere2 was completed as a man made habitat. Consider it a large green house. Korea can construct a series of smaller geodesic domes as green houses to grow many edible plants throughout the year. Smaller structures can be individually powered by solar collectors and wind generators. Here is the link to Biosphere2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosphere_2

Underground Farms
A new trend in crowded areas of Japan and arid areas of Australia is underground farming. A variety of vegetables and rice are being successfully grown. Power will be needed to support lighting (ideally full spectrum lighting) and you will need a reliable source of water. Here is a link to a Japanese underground farm: http://web-japan.org/trends/lifestyle/lif050317.html

Fish Farming
Green house aquaculture is becoming quite popular. Grow your own fish in large fish tanks. All the design blue prints for the building, fish tanks and necessary equipment is already available for Korean farmers to get started right now. Here is the link: http://www.growfish.com/iso.htm

Sea Farming
Using a variety of nets or cages sea farming is becoming more popular. There is a United Kingdom documented study of these systems at this link (offshore cage systems a practical overview): http://ressources.ciheam.org/om/pdf/b30/00600651.pdf Scroll down to page 3 for the pictures of various systems. You will need some boats and divers to feed the fish regularly. Here is a link to a Popular Mechanics article about sea farming: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/earth/1674886.html?page=2

Vertical (skyscraper) Farming
Farming in multi-story tall buildings is now being planned. With gardens or hydroponics bays on each floor of the building you can grow a variety of crops. These vertical farms have a high energy requirement. Here is a link with some pictures (the page takes a minute to load due to large pictures). http://io9.com/342595/vertical-skyscraper-farms-dominate-skyline-of...

Although these modern farming styles are labor intensive they can provide a wide variety of food for the Korean populace. Let us face the facts: If you are starving or your immediate survival is at stake, you may be forced into more drastic measures to get what you need. With than in mind, I recommend immediate support for Korea to build these new farms to feed the people of Korea.

Controlled Environment Farming
How much electricity is needed to keep an ecology friendly building (farm) operational?
What is the best arrangement of redundant energy sources?

Thoughts on Vertical Farming example:
1. Vertical axis wind mills on balconies on all four external walls each floor, adjusted for set angle and speed no matter what the wind speed or direction.
2. Horizontal axis wind mills on roof.
3. Solar panels on all external walls and roof.
4. Cleaning people stand on balconies to clean panels and service wind mills.
5. Miniature Hydro turbines as inline generators on water pipes, accessible and upgradable. Fastest water flow near water faucet outlet so you generate renewable energy while watering plants.
6. Double or triple pain windows (has air space between each glass/plexiglass) for insulation from cold, yet still allows sunlight into plant areas.
7. Solar Tubes to channel sunlight into darker areas.
8. Solar water heater (water in coils heated by direct sunlight) external or inside windows.
9. Miniature wind mills in the heating vents to regenerate energy inside the building.
10. Modular design to easily access and replace units with minimal disturbance to plants.
11. Water recycling.
12. Stand alone energy powered or interconnected with other building allowing both self sustainability and external energy support?

Solar Tubes http://www.solatube.com/
Vertical Farming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_farming
Hydro Turbines http://www.hydro-turbines.com/

Engineers have some planning to do on these projects. The main theme is to integrate as many ecology friendly technologies as possible into these farms to create a redundant system which will keep plants growing reliably, so the Korean people can have multiple sources of food.
