Obama's Transatlantic Challenges

Ian J. Brzezinski, Atlantic Council | November 16, 2010

President Obama will shortly meet NATO and EU leaders in Lisbon where he will be presented with urgent, complex challenges. ++ There are a number of things that need to be made clear. ++ An unambiguous determination to prevail in Afghanistan. ++ A reaffirmation of Europe's centrality in US global strategy and the reestablishment of a "greater Europe" concept including Georgia and Ukraine. ++ Moreover, overblown expectations of NATO's Strategic Concept and the effects of austerity measures on military budgets need to be dealt with.
