Obama Needs to Stop Covering Up

Editorial, The New York Times | October 27, 2009

The Obama administration recently threatened to halt its intelligence-sharing with Britain, to block the release of seven paragraphs of American intelligence documents relating to torture allegations by a former prisoner at Guantanamo Bay. ++ In doing so, justice is denied to the victims of his predecessor's "wayward government policies" and officials are shielded from accountability. ++ Mr Obama has to stop covering up painful truths from the Bush administration and demonstrate that "his nation has turned the page on Bush's shameful policies."

I like this comment! What's this?
The drastic downturn in civility in U.S. politics seems to go back to Richard Nixon's being driven from office. The same "I'll have it my way" attitude that seems to be behind a disproportionate number of Republicans denying global warming probably is behind the continuing ferocity of counter-attacks against Democrats for damages to Nixon and company. Although moderates have recently been removing themselves from Republican party rolls, Democrats appear to believe that conciliation is nevertheless the best approach to Republican truculence. If that is the kind of thinking behind the unwillingness of the Obama administration to investigate alleged past wrongs, then it is both a mistake on practical grounds because authoritarian personalities do not respond to "weakness" in their opponents, and a mistake on ethical grounds because the greatest need for the U.S. is to get its Constitution back.
